CRISWELL CEMETERY- also know as Graveyard Hill Cemetery- located in the NE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of section 7 township 46 north range 10 west. 1.7 miles north of Guthrie on Rte J. This is a combination of old recording and another recording done in 1972. In 1972, the condition of the stones made much of the information doubtful or unreadable. Five stones were unreadable and at least that many were marked with rough stones or unmarked.
A builing used both as a school and a church once stood to the east in the flat along the Creek. A County road may have also been at the foot of the hill.

The name Nevins should NOT be a alternate name, I named it that and we don't need more names. I would think that Old Cumberland might have some validity. I also think that graveyard hill might have been what people called it rather than its assigned name. If, as the write up in your records say, a road ran in the valley to the east, the cemetery would be on a hill. Is it Crisswell or Criswell? I think we should call it Criswell with an alternate of Old Cumberland. Maybe a search of old records or old newspapers might determine if the alternate is valid. I had Old Cumberland about a half a mile north of where we now have it. We will just have to keep looking for data and see what the tide brings in. It sure is nice to clear up one case.
The 1876 Atlas shows the cemetery and a church, but the location is a little to far north. The 1897 has a better location shown and it has a coal mine nearby. The 1919 shows only the cemetery. I would bet the church was called the Old Cumberland Church. I have no data or information to back up it up. All three Atlases show the cemetery in sec 8, but it is not, it is in Sec 7. The road curves around it, I would bet the cemetery was there first and the road had to go around when they tried to follow the section line with it. The 1876 has the land owned by Nancy Criswell, the 1897 and 1919 show A.W. Criswell owning it. The 1876 shows the road going straight south but your Criswell write up says the road ran in the valley to the east and off line. When I was an intelligence officer in the National Guard we were taught that a lot of little, unrelated clues often create a large coherent picture. But what I have learned is that one must be careful not to take note of only those things that support your own theory, but to listen to all data even if it points in another direction.
