BENNETT CEMETERY [PRIVATE]

CA249

Directions by road are as follows: From the intersection of Hwy J and Hwy Y at Guthrie, proceed West on Hwy Y for approximately 1.40 miles to County Road 363 and turn North on that road. This is the road that goes past Dry Fork Church. From the intersection of Hwy Y and CR-363 proceed North for approximately 1.00 miles where the road abruptly turns West, continuing on CR-363 for approximately 0.40 miles where the road again is running in a Northerly direction. Immediately after CR-363 crosses Dry Fork Creek you will encounter a 'Y' intersection with CR-361 which goes off in a Northeasterly direction. Follow CR-361 up the hill and around a curve back to the North where there will be an entrance to Dry Fork Campgrounds on the left. Take the right fork in the campgrounds and immediately you will come to campsite #1 on the right-hand side of the road. The burial site is directly behind campsite #1. It is fenced in; but still a little difficult to find if the leaves are on the trees.

This cemetery is on Federal Government land at the Dry Fork Campgrounds approximately two miles North of Dry Fork Cemetery. There probably are at least fifty burials here judging from the size of the enclosed fenced in area and the number of depressions in the ground. There is only one stone and one base without stone in the whole cemetery. The rest must have been vandalized or carried off or there had been some pretty healthy destruction in the past.

Willis D. Bennett

Son of J. & S. Bennett

died Aug. 24, 1867

aged (rest of the stone is not visible)

Please note that the James F. Bennett burial listing indicated that he is the Son of J. & S. Bennett !!! This may actually be the site and it is possible that the stones that are in the submitted listing are simply fallen down and covered. We did not have time to probe for stones that day and photographed what we could see and went on.

This cemetery is not listed on USGIS- for Callaway County - If you have the location for any of these, Please E Mail.
