In 1846, Peter Galwith, at the age of 24, enlisted at Fredericksburg, Maryland and served in the Mexican War for two years. He was a private and served under the orders of General Zachary Taylor, in Company H - commanded by Captain R. R. Dragoons, commanded by Colonel Butler. He acted as a war scout and convoy scout and participated in a number of "Scrimaches." Additions about Peter F. Galwith's service are as follows: He had a sword, which has been described as a saber with the blade engraved with the figures of a pack of hunting dogs chasing some wild animals down the blade. There is also a story of how he ran the same sword through a Mexican spy after he sneaked into camp one night and killed his companion. Peter F. Galwith was honorably discharged at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri in July 1848 at the age of 25. He had dark hair and eyes, a ruddy complexion and stood 5' 6".

JOHN H. GALWITH, shoemaker, New Bloomfield. Mr. Galwith's father, John W. Galwith, a native of Maryland, but subsequently an early settler in Callaway County, lived to the advanced age of ninety-five and died at the residence of another son of his, George W. Galwith, in this county. His wife, whose maiden name was Elizabeth Finks, was also a native of Maryland. They had seven children: Eliza Ann, John H., Peter, Elizabeth, Gabriel, Susanna and George W. John H., the oldest son and the subject of this sketch, was born in Hagerstown, Maryland, February 2, 1820, and was reared in his native State. He was brought up on a farm to the age of fifteen when he entered the shoemaker's trade and has worked at it ever since, except for three years while he was engaged in the grocery business at Fulton, a period now of nearly fifty years. He was engaged in the grocery business of Fulton during the years 1855, 1856 and 1857. Mr. Galwith's first wife, formerly Miss Martha T. Miles, to whom he was married in Charleston, Virginia, died in December, 1847. He was afterwards married to Miss Catherine Sitton, who died in 1854, leaving him one child, William, who now lives near Fulton; one other died in infancy. To Narcissa McCowan, formerly of Tennessee, daughter of Isaac W. McCowan. She has borne him three children: Mabel, I. Mason and Gertrude. Mr. Galwith has been engaged in the shoemaking business (and of course he makes boots too) for sixteen years, since 1867. WRIGHT DEAD - Native of Maryland Who Lived Practically All of Her Life in Callaway Died early Sunday - Mrs. Ellen Eliza Ecton Wright, died Copy of obituary from the SUN GAZETTE, Fulton, Callaway County, MO. Sunday morning at 6:10 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Will Hafey, in this city. She was 88 years old. Mrs. Wright suffered a broken arm three weeks ago when she fell while in the basement and never recovered from the effects. She was seriously ill about a week. A funeral service was conducted at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Hafey home, at Third and Nichols streets, by the Rev. A. W. Tandy, pastor of the first Baptist Church, of Fulton, and burial was in Pioneers' cemetery. Mrs. Wright was a daughter of the late Judson and Anne Ecton. She was born February 11, 1841, at Burgessville, Md., but came to Callaway County with her parents when five years of age, and all her life since that time had been spent here. She was married to Spencer Wright of Fulton, who passed away 13 years ago. Five children are left to mourn her passing. They are: Mrs. Jerome Collins, Steedman; Mrs. Sarah Corless, Mrs. William Hafey, William A. Wright and Ed Wright, all of Fulton. She also is survived by one brother and one sister, John Ecton and Mrs. Sam Blount, of Fulton. In addition to a number of grandchildren.

Spencer Coleman Wright, 77, years old, died at 7:30 o'clock Sunday morning in the old Gerhardt property in south Fulton. Mr. Wright was a native of Franklin County and was a son of Thomas Wright, a first cousin of Ulysses S. Grant, former president of the United States. The senior Wright was born in Virginia. Besides the widow Mr. Wright is survived by six children. Funeral services will be in the old cemetery. MRS. EMILY SMITH DIES AT CONCORD

North Callaway Woman Became Ill While Attending Community Gathering

Mrs. Susan Emily Smith, aged 70 years, died Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joe Holt, near Concord. Mrs. Smith was sick only a few days, having attended the community club meeting last Friday, where she became ill. Her death was due to nephritis. Funeral services were conducted at the family home at 1:30 o'clock, Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. Dr. J. A. McQueen, pastor of the Concord Presbyterian Church, officiating and burial was in Hillcrest cemetery in Fulton by the side of her husband. A number of Fulton friends of Mrs. Smith attended the services at Hatton. She was a sister-in-law of Judge Robert S. Lamar of the Callaway county probate court.

Mrs. Smith, whose maiden name was Emma Galwith, was born January 25, 1863, at Concord, as a daughter of the late Peter and Susan Galwith and was one of a large family of children. She was reared in the east-of-Fulton community and was married to Vernon O. Smith of Fulton, a farmer, February 3, 1892, at the home of her parents. She and her husband remained residents of the Fulton community all of their lives. Mr. Smith's death occurred January 19, 1929 while they were living on the Ballenger place, one mile southeast of Fulton on the Bellamy Springs road. Mrs. Smith later went to the home of her daughter to live, Mrs. Holt being the only child. She also is survived by one brother, John Galwith of Fulton and two sisters, Mrs. Laura Martin of Fulton and Miss Carrie Galwith of Tillamook, Ore. Mrs. Smith was a member of the First Baptist Church and was active in affairs of the congregation as long as her health permitted. She was a truly home loving woman, a kind neighbor and considerate friend, and her passing will be mourned by many.

She married Vernon Owens SMITH on Wednesday, February 3, 1892, at the home of her parents, and she died Tuesday, January 2, 1934 at the home of her daughter, Florence G. (SMITH) HOLT. Vernon and Emma SMITH only had one child, Florence who married Joe HOLT. Emma's mother, Susan E. SMITH and Vernon Owens SMITH (her husband) were not related. Vernon's sister, Lucy Francis SMITH (1868-1961), married Judge Robert S. LAMAR and this is referenced in the above obituary.

Fulton Carpenter-Contractor Victim of Early Morning Heart Attack.

John Smith Galwith, for many years carpenter and contractor of Fulton, died suddenly at his home at 402 East Fifth street at 7:30 o'clock, Monday morning. He would have been 74 years old in February. Death was attributed to a heart attack. He had been in comparatively good health in recent weeks although he complained at times of his heart. He arose Monday morning and the attack came so suddenly there was not time to call a physician before be expired. Mr. Galwith was born February I 16, 1861, in Callaway county and lived practically all his life in the Kingdom. He followed the occupa tion of carpenter and contractor for many years. t He was married December 19, 1889, to Miss Jennie V. Davidson. of Fulton, who with eight children, survives him. The children are: Miss Nall Galwith, Miss Grace Galwith, James Roy Galwith, Mrs. Irl B. Dreps and Mrs. Ed Newsom of Fulton, Mrs. O. W Muir, Bartlesville, Okla., Mrs. A. W. Callaway Farmer Passed Away at Home Northeast of Auxvasse After Short Illness

William Galwith, 57 years old died at his home five miles northeast of Auxvasse, at seven o'clock Saturday morning. Mr. Galwith had been suffering for several months with liver trouble but had been up and around until about ten days ago when he suffered a stroke of paralysis, since which time he had been confined to his bed. Mr. Galwith was born January 21, 1868, about three miles east of Fulton. He was married to Miss Ada Miller, of McCredie, about 25 years ago. For the last 20 years they have been Living on the farm near Auxvasse. Besides the widow he is survived by one son, Miller Galwith and a daughter, Helen Galwith, both of whom live at home. He also leaves two brothers and six sisters as follows: John Galwith, of Fulton; George Galwith, Orting, Wash.; Mrs. John Lamar, Tilamook, Ore.; Miss Carrie Galwith, Portland, Ore.; Mrs. Verne Smith, east of Fulton; Mrs. S. P. Martin north of Fulton; Miss Lizzie Galwith of Fulton. Mr. Galwith was a substantial farmer, respected in the community in which he lived and his death takes a citizen whose passing will be mourned by relatives and friends alike. He was a member of the Auxvasse Presbyterian church, and the Odd Fellows Lodge in Auxvasse. Funeral services were held at the Auxvasse City Presbyterian church at 2:30, Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. S. G. Wood. Burial in the Auxvasse Cemetery south of the town, will follow.

Obituary: Resident of Steedman Community Is Dead

Mrs. J. F. Collins, 67 years old, two and one half miles northeast of Steedman at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, after an illness of two years. She was critically ill and helpless during the entire two years, and death was not expected. Funeral services were conducted Thursday at Riverview church by the Rev. C. E. Robinson of Mokane, and burial was in the cemetery of the church. Mrs. Collins was born July 2, 1864, near Fulton. She was a daughter of the late Spencer and Ellen Ecton Wright, her maiden name being Flora Ida Wright. She was married to J. F. Collins, a native of Tennessee, on September 4, 1882. To this union fifteen children were born, nine of who are dead. The six living, all of who were present at the funeral, are: Mrs. James Estes, St. Louis; Mrs. M. H. Dillon, Steedman; Mrs. Robert Estes, Mapelton, Iowa; Mrs. Vernie Davis, Sioux City, Iowa; and Percy and Arthur Collins, Fulton. She also leaves two brothers, Ed Wright and William Wright of Fulton, two sisters, Mrs. Will Hafey and Mrs. Sarah Corliss, of Fulton, 31 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Description:

She was a large woman, a good cook, and a hard working woman. After her daughter, Maude, died she made clothes for the girls. She would help them in any way she could. Her politics leaned toward the Democrats.

Jerome was tall and thin, had red hair and mustache. He and Flora Ida were hard working people. They raised chickens, their own meat, and vegetables, and raised tobacco on the farm in the Missouri river bottom. A large orchard provided fruit for their large family and they sold eggs in Steedman, Callaway County, Missouri. Jerome's mother and father both died when he was 7. They lived in Tennessee. Relatives divided the children among them and took them to rear. He was raised in the state of Kansas and migrated to Missouri when grown. He and Ida were married in September of 05 September 1882. His politics leaned toward the Republican Party.

Anna Fae Blount, 93, Fulton, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Fulton Presbyterian Manor. She was born July 9, 1906, in Mexico, to the late George Mortimore Littrell and Effie D. VanHorn Littrell. She married Dewey Albert Blount on Jan. 17, 1925 in Mexico. He preceded her in death on Oct. 2, 1972. Survivors include one son, Charles Richard Blount of Columbia; three grandchildren, Jack Bishop Blount of Columbia; David Blount and Prisella Susan Blount Gemming both of Columbia; and nine great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by one son and one grandson. She was a homemaker and had been employed for 40 years at the International Shoe Factory. She was a member of Court Street United Methodist Church since 1925. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Court Street United Methodist Church with Rev. George Braden and Rev. Otto Steinhaus officiating. Burial will follow at Callaway Memorial Garden Cemetery. Visitation is 6-8 p.m. today at Maupin Funeral Home and again from 1 p.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to Court Street United Methodist Church.

Atlanta, Ga. - Paul G. Blount, 72, of Atlanta, Ga., died Jan. 5, 1992. He was born in Fulton Jan. 20, 1919, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Blount. Surviving are: his wife, Mary Blount; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Mike Binford, of Stone Mountain, Ga.; tow grandsons, Paul and Mark; a nephew, Raymond Blount, of Des Moines, Iowa; two aunts, Fae Blount, and May Mahoney, both of Fulton, Mo.; and numerous cousins. He received his bachelor's degree in 1941 from Westminster College, his master's degree in 1942 from Emory University, and his doctorate in 1960 from Cornell University. He served for 12 years in the Naval Reserve, including three years in World War II. He had been a teacher at Georgia State University from 1955 until his retirement in 1968. He served at the university as a regent's professor of English in 1974, assistant dean of the school of arts and sciences from 1956 to 1960, and as chairman of the English department from 1960 until his retirement. He had been active as a member adviser, counselor, officer and historian of Pi Kappa Alpha. He was the author of "George Sand and the Victorian World." Blunt also wrote numerous articles regarding writers of the Victorian era. He was buried in Atlanta Friday.

Jamison Scott McGhee and Susan Louisa Kemp were married December 16, 1906, at the bride's home in Carrington, Callaway County, Missouri. They lived on a farm just west of Carrington, Township 47, Range 10. Scott was born near Purdin in Linn County, Missouri, the second child of Benjamin Franklin McGhee and Ida Euphemia Jamison. His father and mother were both born near Carrington in the years 1853 and 1857, respectively. Scott's mother died a few days after his birth, so his aunt, Lucy Jamison Reno, and husband Lawrence E. Renoe took him to rear at their home near Carrington. He remained in Callaway County the rest of his life. Susan Kemp was born September 27, 1886, near Hams Prairie, Callaway County, Missouri, the fifth child of Thomas Walter Kemp and Annie Lewis Galwith. Thomas Kemp and Annie Lewis were born near Hams Prairie on April 1, 1851, and near Concord, Callaway County, on November 11, 1854, respectively. Scott and Susan had one child, Myrtle Mae McGhee, who was first married to Raymond A. Walker and later to Gordon Niedergerke. Scott and Susan had one grandson, James Scott Walker, and one greatgrandson, James Scott Walker II. After Scott's death on March 22, 1943, his wife moved to Fulton where she lived until her death on February 14, 1971. Scott was a prominent farmer, known especially for his interest in livestock and for his raising of cattle and registered sheep. Both he and his wife were dedicated and active members of the Carrington Baptist Church, interested in all community affairs and the Democratic political party.

BERKLEY and MARY MARTIN In Memoriam

Berkley Miles Martin and Mary Anna Erwin were married November 16, 1921, at Fulton, Callaway County, Missouri. They lived on what is now Bypass Highway 54, North Fulton, their entire married lives. Berkley was born June 12, 1889, in Auxvasse, Callaway County, Missouri, the first child of Sterling Price Martin and Laura Frances Galwith. Berkley's father was born in Kentucky in 1861. His mother was born in Callaway County, Missouri, in 1864. Callaway County, Missouri, the 13th child of John Law Erwin and the eighth child of his second wife, Rachel Lucinda Snyder. Mary's father was born in Harrison County, Ohio, in 1840. Her mother was born in Perry or Juaniata County, Pennsylvania, in 1859. Berkley and Mary had three children: Adeline, who married Ray Dixon; Erwin, who married Juanita Oliver; and Ray, who married Maxie Morris. They had six grandchildren. Berkley served with Co.B, 349th Infantry in the American Expeditionary Forces in France in World War I. Berkley and Mary were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Fulton. Berkley was a carpenter and retired from the Missouri School for the Deaf. Mary was a housewife; her hobby was growing house plants. They both died in 1959 and are interred in Hillcrest Cemetery in Fulton. Obituary: STROKE FATAL TO "GEORGE W. DILLON

Was A Native of Steedman; Funeral Services Monday

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Riverview Church in Steedman for GEORGE WALTER DILLON, 64, who died at the Callaway Hospital Sunday. Mr. Dillon had suffered a stroke of paralysis last week. He made his home in Fulton at 212 Court Street. The REV. C. C. RIDDLE officiated and burial was in the Steedman cemetery. Mr. Dillon was born November 3, 2882 in Steedman, a son of W. E. and LUCINDA JANE ESTES Dillon. He was married November 27, 1901 to Maude Mae Collins who preceded him in death in May, 1921. Surviving are eight children, Leon Dillon, Phoenix, Ariz.; Ennis Dillon, Lincoln, Nbr.; Raymond Dillon, Mrs. Dan Padgett, Mrs. Bernard Martin, Paris Dillon, Hallie Dillon, Mrs. Curtis Warfield, all of Fulton; nineteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, three brothers, Mose Dillon, Steedman; Edgar Dillon and Thomas Dillon of St. Charles; and four sisters, Mrs. C. Trixie R. Moore, 88, of Holts Summit died March 7, 1988, at Callaway Community Hospital in Fulton. Mrs. Moore was born in Peoria, Ill., on Aug. 1, 1899, the daughter of the late John William and Edith E. Hafey. She married Benjamin F. Moore May 20, 1921, in Fulton. He preceded her in death June 8,1981. Mrs. Moore is survived by four daughters, Zella Miller of Mokane, Jessie Lepper of Henley, Mo., Lillian Talken of Eugene, Mo., and Martha Colter of New Bloomfield, Mo.; two sons, John Moore of Kansas City and Edgar Gene Moore of Shelbina, Mo.; one sister, Celia Rugen of Fulton; 28 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren -and one great-great-grandchild. She also was preceded in death by three brothers; four sisters; one daughter, Betty Hake; and three grandchildren. Mrs. Moore was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fulton. Atlanta, Ga. - Paul G. Blount, 72, of Atlanta, Ga., died Jan. 5, 1992. He was born in Fulton Jan. 20, 1919, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Pearl Blount. Surviving are: his wife, Mary Blount; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Mike Binford, of Stone Mountain, Ga.; tow grandsons, Paul and Mark; a nephew, Raymond Blount, of Des Moines, Iowa; two aunts, Fae Blount, and May Mahoney, both of Fulton, Mo.; and numerous cousins. He received his bachelor's degree in 1941 from Westminster College, his master's degree in 1942 from Emory University, and his doctorate in 1960 from Cornell University. Loyal Ray Martin and Maxie Joyce Morris were married September 7, 1949, at Fulton, Callaway, Missouri. They now reside at 304 Hockaday Avenue in Fulton, Missouri. Ray was born August 23, 1928, in Callaway County, Missouri, north of Fulton, the third child of Berkley Miles Martin and Mary Ann Erwin. David H. Wright

David H. Wright, 78, of Holts Summit, died Monday, March 4, 2002, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born May 9, 1923, in Callaway County, to the late Arthur L and Mabel M. Byers Wright. He married Letha Ann Green on June 9, 1951, in Harrisonville, Ark. She preceded him in death on Jan. 23, 2002. Survivors include a son, David A. Wright of Holts Summit; a daughter, Deborah Goff Bowen of Holts Summit; a brother; AL. "Shorty" Wright of Holts Summit; three granddaughters;, and four great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter. Mr. Wright was a life-long resident of the Central Missouri Area. He attended Fulton Schools, and served in the United States Army in the South Pacific during World War 11. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign War Roy Sone Post 1003 of Jefferson City. He was employed as a driver with Cole County Industries for several years and later owned and operated Dave Wright's dump truck service until his retirement. Services are at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Freeman Chapel of Jefferson City with Rev. Wendell Stoneburner officiating. Interment will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson City. Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Callaway County Animal Shelter of Fulton or the charity of the donor's choice.

Lester Leon Dillon

Lester Leon Dillon, 85, of Fulton died Thursday, May 19, 1988, in Wichita, Kan. Mr. Dillon was born May 6, 1903, in Steedman, the eldest son of Walter and Maude Collins Dillon. He married Edna Fern Powers on Dec. 31, 1937, in Reform. She died Oct. 31, 1983. Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Beckham of Derby, Kan., and JoAnn Tolmachoff of Glendale, Ariz.; two sons, Wallace Dillon of Phoenix, Ariz., and the Rev. Delbert Dillon of Wichita, Kan; three sisters, Lola Padgett, Gladys Martin and Opal Warfield all of Fulton; three brothers, Ennis Dillon of Lincoln, Neb., and Raymond and Paris Dillon of Fulton; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents he was preceded in death by one infant daughter and one son, Ronald. Mr. Dillon was a landscape gardner for 40 years in Phoenix, Ariz., before returning to Fulton to retire. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, May 23 at the Maupin Funeral Home in Fulton with the Rev. Milan Bourland officiating. Edna F. Dillon. 75, 401 Meadow Ridge Apts., Fulton, died Oct. 31 at her home. She was born Jan. 29, 1908 in Gage, Okla., the daughter of Ewell Powers and Margaret Hahn Powers. She was married Dec. 31. 1937 to Leon L. Dillon who survives of the home. Other survivors include two sons, Wallace Lee Dillon, Phoenix, Ariz., and Delbert D. Dillon, Sioux City, Iowa; two daughters, JoAnn Ferguson, Phoenix, and Joyce Beckham, Ava, Mo.: a brother. Floyd Powers. Reform, 17 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald G. Dillon, who died in 1974. Mrs. Dillon had, from the age of 19, dedicated herself to the ministry. She was assistant pastor and later pastor of the Gospel Center Church in Phoenix. She was also pastor of three Church of God Holiness Churchs. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 3 at the Church of God Holiness in Fulton with the Rev. Lyle Howard officiating. Interment will follow in the Reform Church of God Holiness Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Maupin Funeral Home in Fulton from 2-8 p.m. Nov. 2.

June 21 - 1988

Dear Family,

I love each and ever one of you. When you read this I’ll not be with you. I plan to make my home in Heaven. Please meet me there. Not one of you miss making your Eternal Home there. I love the young people that have come and gone over the years in our home (I haven’t approved of things some were doing) but I loved them. Those big better than 6 foot boys that give an old lady a kiss, when she is looking her very worst. Makes you think maybe you haven’t lived for nothing. If I can make just one of them stop and think what Jesus did for them, If you will except Jesus, He is ready to accept you. The job life has given The sorrow. The heartache, the times we didn’t know where to turn, The Granddaughters that say "I love you" when they leave, Father lead them to a Happier Place than this Earth. Be prepaired. We never know what the day will bring. Show your love for one another, don’t be critical, we each have our faults. I have lots of them. Each morning I ask the Lord to help me through that day. If I can make it one day at a time. I’ll be watching and waiting for all of you. The children, the Grandchildren, The in-laws, The Sisters, Bro, The nieces and nephews. All are dear to me, God grant my request that not one miss Heaven.

Sitting here in the hospital as the snow falls, quiet, isolated, cold, thinking of the day, past days, future days yet to come, remembering days that have been much better, yet still, one's that have been much worse. Although, sad as I am that it is probable that we are spending our last precious hours with a dear woman, whom I think a lot of, yet a part of me can't help to think, why? Why be sad, such a wonderful woman can only be going to the heavenly father above, and there is no sadness in that, only happiness can be felt for such a wonderful thing. I look around at all of the family that has gathered with so much love for Grandma Dillon, that it just flows from every word that is spoken. So, as I ponder on this for a minute, I think I can only pray that God blesses me with the kind of love that Grandma had in her heart and freely gave to all who knew her. When Grandma Dillon takes her final chariot ride with a glorious angel of love, I hope to feel just a minute part of the joyous feeling at the point when God gives her the greatest gift of all, The Ride Home! Obituary: Paris Dillon, 84, of Fulton, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Fulton Nursing and Rehab. He was born April 15, 1915, in Callaway County to the late maude Collins and G. W. Dillon. He married Edith Williamson. She preceded him in death on March 7, 1964. Obituary: Funeral services for Mrs. Paris Dillon, who died Saturday at her farm home on Route 1, were held this afternoon at the Maupin Funeral home here. The Rev. Sam McLarren officiated and burial was in Callaway Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews: Clyde Padgett, Lloyd Martin, Carl Rehma, Bruce Williamson, Roger Williamson and Ted Harrison. Mrs. Dillon was horn on January 20, 1907, at Steedman, daughter of the late George and Sally Shiverdecker Williamson. She was the former Edith Mae Williamson. She was married to Paris Dillon in 1934 and he survives. Other survivors are a daughter Mrs. Ira (Lois Dean) O'Neal of Fulton Miss Judith Mae and Walter Nelson Dillon of the home, two grandchildren raised in the home, Glen Kosky and Mrs. Johnny (Billy Jean) Clayton. There are three other grandchildren and one great grandchild, 10 nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two brothers, Carl Wise Williamson and Robert Leo Williamson, both of Fulton. One brother, Manless (Buck) Williamson, preceded her in death Oct. 20, 1945. Three half-brothers and one half-sister. Surviving are: Martin Luther Williamson and David Wilson Williamson of Fulton, George William Williamson of New Orleans, La,, and Mrs. Percy (Sylvia) Langley, Fulton.

She was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Steedman, a daughter of Moses and Nola Collins Dillon. She was married June 10, 1945, to Ernest E. Verble, who died June 27, 1990. She was a factory worker for Emerson Electric until her retirement. She was a member of Steedman United Methodist Church and the Sunshine Club of Steedman. Survivors include: two sons, Gary Verble, Fenton, and Johnny Verble, Auxvasse; one daughter Loretta Bonta, Tampa, Fla.; one sister, Gertrude Vandeloecht, Steedman; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. One daughter, Norma Butler, preceded her in death. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Maupin Funeral Home, Fulton. The Rev. Lewis Curtis will officiate. Burial will be in Steedman Cemetery. She was born September 1, 1927 in Fulton, Missouri, a daughter of Arthur Collins and Bertie Hall Collins. She married Glenn R. Davis on March 21, 1946 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He survives of the home. The Rev. Sam McLaren, pastor of the of the Church of God Holiness, read the ceremony 7:00 P. M. before an altar decorated with tapers in candelabras, huckleberry, white bells and large bows of ribbon. The bride, given in marriage by her father, chose a street length, white faille dress with overlay net embroidery. The shoulder length veil was of nylon net. She carried white roses on a white Bible. Mrs. William D. Davis of Fulton was matron of honor. She was attired in a dusty rose, princess style dress featuring a V neckline, and carried a bouquet of white pom Pons. Miss Carolyn Dillon of Fulton was candlelighter. She wore a pink taffeta dress with a scoop neckline in front coming to a V in back. William D. Davis was best man for the bridegroom and Harry and Carl Davis were ushers. The mother of the bride wore a light blue crepe dress and Mrs. Burry, mother of the bridegroom, wore a dress of navy blue linen. A reception was held immediately following the wedding in the church basement. Miss Nellie Burry cut the cake, assisted by Miss Carolyn Dillon, and Mrs. Claude Menefee served punch, assisted by Miss Betty Hall. Miss Patty Hall was in charge of the guest book. The couple will make their home in Fulton where they are both employed at State Hospital No. 1.

The Wedding went off without a hitch. The couple turned from the altar for the return march together up the aisle. The bridegroom, a shy type, was finishing the ordeal with a poker face. His bride was radiant. As they made their exit, the smiling bride noticed his grim face. She corrected the situation and gave those in attendance a chuckle. "Smile!" she stage-whispered, giving her newest possession a jab in the ribs.

Donna's Brie-A-Brae Shop, which opened on Court Street in October. stocks a mixture of old glassware. crystal and antique furniture. Owner Donna Burry, who lives with her hus- band and two sons on Route 5, Fulton within a mile of where she was raised, says "the most fun about the business is going out to look for stock. I needed an excuse to go to all the auctions I want to." Burry says business is good, "I'rn enjoying it so much. Everyone has been so nice, and the other dealers in town have been really good to me." She says she knows "a little" about antiques. "I've studied a great deal, and I've gone to auctions practically all of my life. I enjoy them, and I've always been aware of prices." The Bric-A-Brae Shop handles antique furniture strictly on consignment now. Burry says she doesn't want to invest the amount of money it would take to buy furniture. "The person who supplies me has studied furniture for many years. I know she stands behind everything in the shop. 'It's so easy to fake antiques these day's, it's a little scary if you don't know your supplier personally. When I buy glassware, I buy from estate auctions where know the piece is, valid." Burry would like to work as a "finder" for customers. She says she has quite a few souces including magazines and catalogs to find rare pieces of glass for collectors. "In a sense I take orders for glassware," she says. "If someone has a piece they're looking for, I try to order it for them, or I'll keep my eyes open when I attend auction sales." Everyone in the courtroom held their breath as U.S. Judge Nanette Laughrey read her verdict in Helen Havrum’s wrongful death suit against the U.S. government. For six long years, some Virginia employees believed that veteran Elzie Havrum was murdered at Truman Veterans Hospital in 1992. The verdict $450,000 for the Havrum family and a federal judge’s conclusion that Richard Williams is a killer -brought relief sadness and closure for the Havrums and their supporters.

At every step of the investigation during the past six years, we felt like Charlie Brown stepping up to the

football and having it ripped away," said Edward Adelstein, Truman’s chief of pathology and a key witness for the plaintiff.

Four generations of Havrums attended most of the trial. Seldom during the eight-day trial did the Havrums

overtly display emotion. However, members muffled sobs as Laughrey read the first part of her decision, which initially appeared unfavorable toward them. After the courtroom emptied and the full impact

act of the decision registered, the family and their attorneys John Kurtz and Claudio Molteini huddled around Helen Havrum. Many, including Kurtz, wept openly for the first time. Elzie Havrum was one of more than 40 veterans who died suspiciously on Ward 4 East at Truman Veterans Hospital in 1992 under nurse Richard Williams’ care. An FBI investigation did not result in charges against Williams. But in her decision, Laughrey wasted no words. "I do believe (nurse) Richard Williams killed Elzie Havrum," she said. Laughrey found that the hospital knew about the suspicious deaths prior to Havrum’s own death, but they did not take timely action to remove Williams from patient care.

"The Virginia was negligent for failing to intervene," Laughrey said. "The first and foremost concern should be the patients’ safety and not Williams’ feelings." Laughrey said she will rule on attorney’s fees when files her written opinion next week. The plaintiff asked the court for a judgment of $500,000, plus $49,600 in lost pension benefits and $5,440.50 in funeral expenses.

It is unclear what impact Laughrey’s verdict will have on potential civil suits by the families of other veterans who died on Ward 4 East. The only legal route to try Williams is through criminal prosecution, but Boone County prosecutor Kevin Crane said Saturday he has, no plans to pursue Williams.

The Virginia case A gutsy decision by Judge Laughrey In her first big case since taking the bench, newly appointed federal judge Nanette Laughrey made a dramatic finding against the Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital officials and nurse Richard Williams, awarding Helen Havrum $450,000 for the wrongful death of her husband, Elzie. Laughrey said, I believe nurse Williams killed Elzie Havrum as she explained her ruling.

TRIBUNE'S VIEW

This is the first opportunity for a determination in court concerning widely held suspicions about Williams, on duty when an inordinate number of deaths occurred at the hospital in 1992. Hospital and federal Virginia officials refused to acknowledge trouble or investigate the suspicious circumstances. In the face of continuing outside pressure, Virginia officials stonewalled. Finally, Williams left the hospital and later quit practicing as a nurse. He repeatedly denied any wrong doing. Belated inquiries by the FBI and Congress failed to bring conclusive results. Only when Havrum died with suspicious amounts of codeine in his body did his widow bring the case that ended up in Laughrey's court. U.S. prosecutor Stephen Hill said Laughrey was wrong, that hospital officials did not know about danger to patients under Williams' care because no such danger existed. Laughrey said Virginia officials should have known because of overwhelming circumstantial evidence and the finding of unusual amounts of codeine in Havrum's body. If a criminal case is to be pursued against Williams, it will have to be brought by Boone County prosecuting attorney Kevin Crane. As in the famous O. J. Simpson case, Laughrey's finding in the civil case before her was that a preponderance of evidence proved Williams guilty, not evidence beyond a reasonable Doubt necessary to find criminal guilt. Simpson was found not guilty of killing his former wife in a criminal case and then guilty in an ensuing civil case. Nurse Williams and the Virginia have been found guilty in a civil case, and no criminal case has been brought. I don't know whether Crane has enough evidence to charge Williams with murder, but I do know that Virginia officials up and down the line obstructed the pursuit of justice because they did not want adverse publicity about their hospital management. Truman research chief Gordon Christensen and pathologist Eddie Adeistein, the insider whistle-blowers, deserve great credit for risking their professional careers to reveal events they felt should be investigated. Hospital manager J. L. Kurzejeski and federal Virginia officials acted reprehensibly. They had and have every right to defend themselves, but only by finding the truth, not by obstructing its pursuit. Clearly, they did not want a full investigation. They wanted the matter swept under the rug. I can't second-guess all aspects of Laughrey's performance in this case.

Apparently, she made sure rules of procedure were observed carefully. I can respond to her finding, which was reasonable and courageous. She did not duck the issue. She heard evidence and made a tough decision. Good for her.

Obituary: JAMES HENRY DILLON, age 41 of Mokane, died Friday April 22, 1994 At Still Regional Medical Center in Jefferson City after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born March 9, 1953 in Fulton, MO. A son of Boyd Homer Dillon who preceded him in death in 1973 and his mother Thelma Berniece Adams (Dillon) Masek of Mokane, Mo. He married Margie Bahr of Mokane, MO. on September 27, 1978 she survives at their home. Other survivors include two children; Jamie Lynn and Dakota Bahr Dillon both of the home. Two brothers; Dale E. Dillon of St. Louis, MO and William Everett Dillon of Warrenton, MO. One sister, Nancy Matthews of Columbia, MO. His step-father, Floyd Masek of Mokane, Mo. His mother-in-law and father-in-law Peggy and Kennie Bahr of Fulton. Two brothers-in-law; Randy Bahr of Honolulu, Hawaii and Jeff Bahr of Newport, Kentucky. Several aunts, nieces, nephews and great nieces also survive. In addition to his father, Mr. Dillon was preceded by one sister and several uncles. Mr. Dillon graduated from the South Callaway R-2 Schools in 1972, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. He attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. Prior to his illness he worked as a career insurance agent for the Missouri Farm Bureau where he earned many awards. He was a member of the Missouri Life Underwriters Assoc. for many years. Mr. Dillon was well-known for his softball accomplishments. Most recently he had coached the Mokane girl's softball team. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer and bowler. He had served as the Mayor for the city of Mokane.
