High Hill

Mrs. Eula Gentry Best

The people of our community were shocked and saddened last Friday evening, March 6th, when the news went out that Mrs. Eulah Best, wife of Dr. John Best was dead. Although she had not been in good health for some time, and her relatives and friends had entertained no hope of her recovery, they were not expecting the "grim reaper" so soon. This death scene unusually sad, because of her having been married only one year and one month when she was called away. Her funeral was held at her home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Russell of Warrenton after which her remains were laid to rest in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery near town, by the side of her father and brothers who preceded her several years ago.

The large crowd who came to pay their last tribute of respect and the many beautiful floral offerings were an evidence of the esteem in which she was held.

Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved husband, whose home she had brightened for one short year, and to her devoted mother, who feels this sorrow so keenly, this daughter being the last of several children to succumb to this dreadful disease. To those whose hearts have been made sad, we would say: "Meet patiently each trial, grief and care. God knoweth what is best for us to hear. Have we of sorrow more than seems our share? Without it, we might miss the mansions fair; What seems a trial to our blinded eyes, may be a priceless blessing in disguise. Trust God’s great wisdom and the end will tell that, through His love, He doeth all things well."

Mrs. (Charles) Margaret Blackburn 55 was shot about 8:30 p. m. in the backyard of her home by Ernest Kistler who killed himself about a quarter of a mile away at his home . . . (I have not transcribed the entire article, it consists of two and a half columns on the front page of this paper. It included photographs of Margaret Blackburn and Ernest Kistler. Jealousy was suspected as the motive as she had rejected his advances and told him to stay away from her.)

They brought to Missouri a young girl, Virginia Ball, 12 years old, whom they have been rearing through she was never legally adopted.

The body of Mrs. Blackburn was taken to Centerville Sunday in a truck by Clint Nicolson for whom Mr. Blackburn worked.

(The Fulton Daily Sun Gazette, Monday May 4, 1931 carried this story on page one, columns 1 and 2 and continued on page six.)
