Census for Callaway County online
Prior to
statehood:
The government of Spanish Louisiana
required a census from 1772-1803 of people living in the northern
sections of its domain before the United States made the
Louisiana purchase. These census schedules were held at the
Spanish Archives in Seville Spain. Some have been published in
two volumes titled, The Spanish Regime in Missouri, by Louis
Houck, (Chicago,1909), and Anglo-Americans in Spanish Archives,
by Lawrence Feldman, (Baltimore, 1991

County-The original census schedule is "on-file" in
St.Charles, and copies are housed at the State Historical Society
of Missouri in Columbia

Census
After Missouri became a
state in 1821, a law was passed providing for a population count
to be taken every four years. Unfortunately, there was a fire in
the Capitol in 1837 that destroyed all previous census records.
The censuses continued every four years, but another fire at the
Capitol in 1911 took its toll on many more census schedules. The
only schedules known to remain are listed as follows: (microfilm
copies are available at the Missouri State Archives, unless noted
otherwise.

Federal Census
What the federal Census contains
per census year.
The 1830 and 1840 census shows
only the head of the household by name- All other persons in
household are by age group only. The age groups for white male
and female are: under 5; 5 to 10; 10 to 15; 15 to 20; 20 to 30;
30 to 40; 40 to 50; 50 to 60, 60 to 70; 80 to 90; 90 to 100; over
100. Maleand female Slaves under 10, 10 to 24; 24 to 36; 36 to
55; 55 to under 100; 100 and over. Sub category for deaf and
dumb, blind colored that were included in the count.

Note: all states have been indexed on microfilm using the
soundex system; however only those households with
children aged 10 or under are listed in the microfilmed
index.
For each urban household, an entry shows the Name of the
street and house number.
For each person in a household the entry shows:
Name
whether white, black, mulatto, Indian or Chinese; sex;
age; month of birth if born within the year relation to
head of household
occupation and months unemployed
Name of state, territory or country of birth; father's
birthplace; mother's birthplace
school attendance within the year
inability to read if aged 10 or older; inability to write
if aged 10 or older
whether sick or temporarily disabled on the day of
enumeration and the reason

For each household, an entry shows the Name of the
township, city and ward, if any, and the street and house
number, if in an urban area.
For each person listed the entry shows:
Name
relation to head of household
color; sex; month and year of birth, and age at last
birthday
marital status; number of years married
for married women, number of children born and number of
those children living
birthplace (state territory or country), father's birth;
mother's birth
[if
alien or naturalized citizen: the year of immigration to
the US; number of years in the US, whether still an
alien, having applied for citizenship, or naturalized]
occupation of each
person 10 and older, and number of months not employed
information about school attendance, literacy and ability
to speak English
whether residence was a farm; whether occupant was a
homeowner
